In a previous post at a Citizen Warrior site I referred to the idea of a "Kaa of Islam" - (based on the Kipling character, Kaa The Snake, that mesmerised its prey into submission in the Jungle Book).

Taqiyya is indeed Kaa!

I was recently engaged in a discussion with a muslim about Taqiyya where he rather aggressively asserted that Taqiyya only exists as a SHIA concept and not one shared by Sunni. Although I am quite aware it is a concept shared and used by both sects, it was interesting to see how he asserted this and was demanding scholarly sources for the justifications for using Taqiyya and Kitman. I found a good source with cited hadiths and quranic quotes.

As you can see the author has other motives for revealing the use of Taqiyya by Sunni Muslims. The point of it is that both sects have been revealed the use of Taqiyya and one does not have a monopoly over its use. This should be sufficient information to debate someone who is arguing the point that only Shia are permitted to use Taqiyya. This page shows that BOTH are permitted to use Taqiyya.

have several followers of my
blog who just this week asked
me for a good description of
taqiyya. I have yet to find
much courage in islam or the
writings. Seems that they would
rather use deceptions and other
distasteful tactics rather than
manning up or growing a pair.

Quranic verses 3:28 and 16:106, as well as Muhammad’s famous assertion, “War is deceit,” have all led to the formulation of a number of doctrines of dissimulation — the most notorious among them being the doctrine of “Taqiyya,” which permits Muslims to lie and dissemble whenever they are under the authority of the infidel. Deception has such a prominent role that renowned Muslim scholar Ibn al-Arabi declares: “In the Hadith, practicing deceit in war is well demonstrated. Indeed, its need is more stressed than the need for courage.”
