Weapons of Mass Distortion: The Coming Meltdown of the Liberal Media by L. Brent Bozell is about the liberal bias in the mainstream newsmedia.

I suspected there was media bias before the Iraq war. But since then it has been blatantly obvious that the mainstream newsmedia are against the war. They are not just covering the events. They are trying to make it clear this war is WRONG. Weapons of Mass Distortion shows clearly that the bias is much worse than I thought.


One thing Bozell does is define where the bias is, exactly: Mainstream news media. In other words, the news coverage by ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, CNN, PBS, and NPR. And almost every major newspaper including the LA Times and the New York Times. Liberals often tell me there is no media bias. Look at Fox, they say, or Rush Limbaugh. But the majority of people do not get their news from those outlets (read more about that here). Those outlets are puny and reach a very small percentage of the market. The list above is where MOST people get their news.

And Bozell also points out that Rush Limbaugh and shows like his are not newsmedia. Limbaugh is openly biased and his show is an opinion-oriented show. He is not pretending to report news events without bias, but the mainstream newsmedia is doing exactly that.

And in this book I learned HOW they bias their journalism. There are many different ways, and some are quite clever. That's why most people I've talked to think there is no bias in the mainstream news coverage.

This strikes me as important because it is so influential. I don't really think it's bad when a news program is biased. What makes it bad is when people don't KNOW it is biased. Please help get the word out. Read this book and then talk to your friends and family.
